RIP HUMAN RACE: Contradiction Creation

For this assignment I had to create a graphic that was designed for a certain feeling or theme. For my graphics (I made 3) I decided I wanted it to kind of have a “End of the world propaganda” theme. I created these graphics to be ironic, like the assignment said, but to also have that “the world is ending” vibe that is sort of ironic. I wanted to create social media posts that could also be sort of used as posters that could be hung up around town about the world ending. These graphics I made were obviously supposed to be funny, but also I feel like these would be Retweeted during the time of the apocalypse if the world was actually ending because they are meant to be like ironically funny. I had a lot of fun with this assignment because it really made me think outside the box and kind of play a joke on the memes that sometimes go around these day. Check them out!

I AM LEGEND: Apocalyptic Alternative Book Cover

Here is my modern take on I Am Legend’s book cover! I made this using Canva. I wanted this cover to sort of have a modern more realistic 2018ish style to the world ending feeling. Let me know what you think! I really tried to focus on the style of the typing in correspondence with the main picture. I really wanted to focus on the elements of simplicity, with the typing and picture being the main focal point. I used the Adobe tips on how to best place the “I AM LEGEND” typing and I learned that it should not be center, but more upper to showcase the part of the picture you want the audience’s eyes to go straight to.

Week 5 rundown!

My favorite part of this week was EASILY tweeting with the class listening to #DS106Radio! Literally it was histerical. It was so funny my roommates ended up listening to some of the show with me. I missed 5 minutes of it because I ran to the bathroom, lol, but besides that it was SO fun. I was nervous because I thought I may have been tweeting a biiit too much, but then I was like whatever it’s better than tweeting too less. I loved reading what Lauren and Joshua were writing as well. It was such a fun night and an incredibly fun assignment.

Also this was me the whole time:

For the rest of the week, I enjoyed a lot of the audio assigmenets. I actually did the “What song am I humming?” assignment and I had a lot of fun with that. (Even though everyone guessed it right away) I also had fun with the Frequency assignment, although I spent wayyyy too much time listening to everyone else’s recordings. I enjoyed going through them, but I did get a bit overwhelmed because I didn’t want to make my recording boring- I wanted it to be cool and futuristic, which I think I did my best to do.

Overall, I think this week was a lot of fun, but I felt like I wanted to work more on some audio based projects. My resume I made for my character was also a huge highlight for me. I spent a lot of time creating my character and thinking about who I wanted her to be. At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to make her the office space, but for me making a resume was actually a super productive assignment because it got me to think bigger and deeper about the details of my character. I’m super excited to hear what people think of her, and I enjoyed creating her resume (which may or may not look better than my actual resume lol)

I think this week was a lot of fun! I want to continue to work hard with audio, and I hope we get to live tweet more throughout the semester bc that was literally amazing..

The weekly question was “how are you feeling?” and so far, I am feeling really excited about this class. There’s not many classes you can be creatively challenged by- and this class is for sure something I have been wanting for a while. I feel more creative overall, and I love working with everything digital.

Alien Jesus?? Frequency 2156

I really enjoyed spending time on the Frequency radio website and listening to a bunch of different audio that people in the past have created. I got the idea for my recording due to a conspiracy theory my friends and I talk about all the time that was mentioned by theorist and YouTube star Shane Dawson. In my recording, Shane talks about how some people have a theory that Jesus was an alien. Super weird and probably not true- I know- but whats interesting about this theory is that it sounds so fake which is why I wanted to edit him discussing alien Jesus and create effects on it to make it sound like he’s almost trying to convince people in the future that Jesus was an alien. It’s all fun and games and I think it’s such a dumb conspiracy and obviously not true, but its so out there that it’s hilarious.

After spending time on the Frequency website, I think it does a great job at creating stories through audio. I think that because it is audio based, it forces you to use your imagination and make a slight disconnect more than video does. Video is easier to interpret, and I think the site being fully audio gives you space to create and imagine something that others talk about which enhances the overall experience. i think the creator chose audio mainly because audio is a medium that forces the listener to use their thoughts and emotions to understand a piece of art. Audio is such an incredible form of communication, and I think this was the perfect medium for the site and activity. What I would do differently is maybe not group them in such large regions, for example it was kind of hard to navigate the site and I would get frustrated trying to go by places in the world. I think there should be more of a category feature too so when searching for audio it can be a bit easier.

Assignment: Reading and Resource Reflection

As well as Communication and Digital studies major, I am also Music technology major which means my focus is on recording and production arts. For the past four years I have spent my time learning audio production and learning how to edit sound. I love being able to use the recording studio, sound board, and production equipment at Pollard, as well as using different DAW (digital audio workspaces) including logic pro x and ableton live. I spend a lot of my time as a student constantly recording audio. I enjoy writing songs and producing them myself- last year I even released my first album which was fully produced, recorded and written by me! Songwriting and production is my passion- so I love everything audio.

I enjoyed listening to the RadioLab’s YouTube videos because I’ve worked at a radio station and everything he said is so true and relatable to the field. In my personal opinion, I don’t believe radio will ever die, but the popularity of streaming services is keeping audio alive beyond what CD’s and records ever could. I am an NPR fanatic and I love listening to podcasts on my way to work- my life revolves around audio and I don’t think any of us could fully function in a world where recorded audio did not exist.

I also spent time looking about the audio resources page. I’ve been using my soundcloud account for the past 6 years, and I am excited to keep using it for this class. I also love Audacity and have spent a lot of time creating projects with the program for professional work and in internships. I am currently enrolled in an audio techniques class with Dr. Bratt in the music department, and my senior project is all about learning how to record the best song using expensive ass equipment. I have some really helpful textbooks regarding audio works, microphones, and techniques if anyone would like to borrow them!

All in all, as a music major I am all about audio and spend literally my life learning how to create the best sound, so I am excited about further learning through this class.

Winston Henerly: Character Resume

I thought long and hard about who I wanted my overall character to be for this class. I wanted her to be someone who is laid back, but on a mission to stay alive. I wanted to have someone that was outside my comfort zone, but who was artsy fartsy just like me. Regarding the Archetype spreadsheet. Winston is one of those characters who ISN’T the hero, but is kind of like the sidekick to whoever is in charge. I consider her the Ron Weasley of the group- important, brings jokes and releases tension when shit is going down, but overall is just a sidekick.

I decided to create Winston Henerly- an aspiring actress from NYC who is living in L.A. I thought having a character who was a former actress could bring something new and cool to the vibe of the tribe. I also thought that it was push my creativity and make me work hard to learn more about her and to create her overall persona. For my resume, I used Canva, literally my favorite graphic design site, but I focused more on the research of who she was BEFORE the apocalypse rather that what her resume would be during the apocalypse. this is her resume as an aspiring Emma Stone wannabe in California:

Week 4 rundown: Photography fun!

This week was probabaly my favorite week of class so far. First of all, my favorite activity was the photoblitz! I took pictures around the newsroom at my internship and it was so fun. I was running around in a hurry, and my co-workers got into the photoblitz as well! It was such a fun little activity. Taking the pictures were easy, but I primarily spent my time editing all the pictures to turn out the way I wanted them too. I edited my photos with Adobe and a cheap App I found on the App store. What I enjoyed was how we had to take the photos in 20 minutes- I think after learning more tips and tricks it was challenging because we always want to take the best picture, but the time limit made it difficult.

Here are my edited photos from the blitz!

I also enjoyed Tweeting this week for the Daily Challenges. Here is what I came up with!

I didn’t focus too heeavily on the daily creates this week unlike last week because I wanted to spend time watching Mad Max and also learning more about photography. When reaseraching and reading the tips, my main focus was learning new angles and trying to get better at making pictures not so “perfect”.

I enjoyed watching the movies for this week, and I really enjoyed doing my 6 stars. I have to say, I liked the prompts for the stars last week better than the ones this week because I didn’t feel very challenged or sparked to be creative. Last week I was really excited because I enjoyed the prompts, however I still enjoyed doing them. I actually thought of some cool new prompts that I might want to share eventually!

Do you think an animated GIF can be considered a story? Why or why not? It would be great to include some
examples to illustrate your thoughts.

I 100% think that a gif tells a story. It’s literally a visual story lol. Gifs are so unique in the fact that they are short clips, but within those clips they are 100% a visual story. I don’t know how to more further expand, because to me it’s so obviously a story. Here are some gifs that I found that tell a story:

The Life Of A Zombie

When I first saw this assignment I immediately thought of this commercial:

Sooooo, for this assignment i decided to make a gif out of this commercial by giffing the zombie on the bus! Here is my final gif of the life of an every day zombie:

giphy-1

I thought making a gif out of this would be too funny because its so like unusual, yet hilarious that a zombie is just chilling on the bus with some dumbass humans lol.

Let me know if you enjoy it!

Here are my two Cipher Typography photo images!

I want people to take time to figure out what they mean, so next week I will reveal how I edited these pictures! Take a guess below:
